8 Things Teachers Should not do!

Whenever one enters a profession, they do so with a feeling that they want to learn everything in the shortest possible  period of time. With Google and the ‘How To-’ lists which are available in loads, a person first thinks of doing all the relevant things which would help him her to progress quickly in life earning rewards and awards during the process.
Kindly note that research suggests that success does not happen overnight. The minimum period of working and struggling given by experts and researchers is five years. Not a minute less though this time frame can be extended and can go on for a period of ten years or even more when you can say that you have achieved some success.
All the colleagues and friends simply focus on telling you all the things that you should be doing since you have decided to start working. Your to-do-list also comprises of things to be done every single day.

“The essence of strategy is choosing what not to do!”-Michael Porter

Read the above quote. It clearly states that if you are planning to walk up the ladder quickly, then you have to choose what not to do also at the same time. Committing too many errors would make you step back every time that you try to move forward.
I did not enter this profession as a choice. So in the beginning I rebelled against everything that I was told to do. I found faults in the working of my colleagues. I was also cynical to many as I came to know later from some of them. Complacence also settled in me somewhere and stopped me from working.

Gradually some instances happened and my interest in my profession started evolving.
As I recollect my journey, I feel most educators do not take the following into account when they join the profession. Or sometimes when the workload is more they tend to overlook these aspects.
Anger and insecurity will make you react in the below mentioned ways. Try to control both these feelings on your professional front. If you are mindful of these two fallible human traits, you will go a long way and that too sooner not later.
So here goes my list of Not-To-Do-Things!

1 Don’t be Scared of any Child!
Too many teachers make this mistake if the level of confidence is low in a teacher. Children are smart. They can sense and feel the insecurity among the teachers and they react in various ways. Either they will misbehave with the educator, or shout in the class, or keep talking when told not to, or back answer, etc.

The solution here is to stay calm, control your anger and spread a smile which looks genuine on your face.

Of course this is the outer facade that can be used as a shield until you take total control of the situation.

The real trick is to understand the psychology of the child. Find out what has disturbed the child or try to touch the child’s heart by responding with love or fulfilling his need for insecurity or any other issue that the child might be facing.

Take up an activity which the child might be interested in or shower praise upon the child. Maintaining eye contact for a long period of time in the classroom also helps.

If nothing works then counselling the child will definitely will. You can also ask a colleague to talk to the child and try to find out the problem.  The idea is to not get bogged down by the attitude of the child but to try and find out a way.

You don’t have to show the child that you are the boss. Try to walk hand in hand with the child.
There are three easy ways to develop a Teacher-Child-Relationship-
a.  Pay attention to the child’s needs.
b.  Develop a positive relationship based on praise, rewards and conversation.
c.   Do not detach the strings of EMPATHY.

2 Don’t Procrastinate!
Work gets piled up when it is delayed. So do not PROCRASTINATE.  Keep completing the work as it comes. Adopt creative techniques to keep yourself passionate at work.

Set challenges for yourself and accomplish them before the set deadline.

Encourage yourself and self motivate to do what you have decided. Draw inspiration from a source which pulls out the laziness syndrome from your body.
Think, Plan, Act-Don’t waste away your time.

3 Don’t Criticise Another Teacher in Front of a Parent or a Child!
This happens in a frenzy. Sometimes you are trying to deal with a class in your own ways but the response has not been positive. No matter what you do, you are held back every time due to one or the other tasks which do not go as planned.

You are putting in sincere efforts but results are unsatisfactory.
So the educator is called to the Principal’s Office, explanations sought, etc. etc. During such a time the educators seek an escape route and generally it seems pretty good to defame another person to gain superiority. Blame game is not a wise thing to do.

Remember here that if you want to grow in your life, never pull anyone down, push yourself up.

Criticising a colleague in front of the parents will bring a negative impact on your personality. Avoid! Never do it! In fact you must be there to support a fellow teacher if something has gone wrong.

4 Don’t refuse to take a good idea to class!
I have stated this earlier also that excessive learning results in over thinking. This leads to less or no action. So read or browse the internet for a short period of time. If you come across a good idea, write it down and take it to class either the next day or whenever you wish to.

Do not let that idea go waste. If you spot a good idea being used by one of your colleagues, appreciate the person, use the idea and remember to thank the person from whom you had borrowed the idea.

This leaves a mark of mutual respect for one another.

Plagiarism is a punishable offence online and brings irony and disrespect offline.

So take care!

5 Don’t be immersed in work all the time!
Work can be bogging. Some educators are in the habit of completing their work way ahead of the time. They just want to finish off their work.

This keeps them busy all the time and results in over work. At times quality of work suffers here. So divide the time of work and ease at the workplace. It is alright to just sit and look out of the staffroom window sometimes. Take a break of five to ten minutes, calm yourself down and then start working again.

6 Don’t Clutter your workstation!
Keep clutter away from the workstation. Organise your desk. It sends out positive vibes. A properly arranged workstation will attract you towards work.

A neat and clean workstation shows your approach towards your work. So mind it and let it portray an organised picture of yourself.

7 Don’t read circulars or instructions in a Hurry!
On certain days there are too many circulars which come from the various administrative heads. In a hurry to sign, the educators do not read them carefully and hence there are problems in comprehending the circular and remembering the submission dates.

Also if an educator thinks that the circular has something which was predictable, they do not read the instructions carefully.

This results in too many misunderstandings leading to various explanations or written memos from the administrators to the teachers.
So do not read the circulars in a hurry. Take your time to read the circular, note down the points if required and then on the second level discuss the same with other colleagues. This ensures that everyone has understood the instructions properly and is working on the same lines.

8 Don’t wait for a deadline to submit your work!
Certain things like examination dates or Parent teacher meetings are fixed and have a particular set pattern of working. So there are certain things which are mandatory to be done. They are already in the system. Keeping in mind the academic calendar of the school, be prepared with what might be asked. Try to submit everything before the deadline.

This reduces stress on yourself. Time management tips will come effective here.

Most teachers just take it as a cumbersome task to submit work before deadline. They want to take it as granted and submit the work only after several reminders.

This shows and proves that they are less efficient. Because one cannot fail the deadline every time. If it is once it can be understood and no one would take an offence.

But if you repeat it again and again then you are bound to face the consequences.

Final Word-
Put a strategy in place for your work. And this strategy must include the things you should not do when you enter the field of education.

6 Amazing Life Hacks For Teachers

“Without Teachers, Life would have no CLASS!”

This quote was amazing to read on the internet. It hit me and I really liked it.

Everyone loves to live their life to their fullest and more importantly with a particular standard of living. What more can one ask for.
The life of a teacher seems to be loaded with a lot of work. Planning is an integral part of the job. A lot of success depends on proper planning. Without planning, the educator is not able to implement things and hence failures occur.

‘Failure is DELAY, not DEFEAT.’-Denis Waitley

Working at home then going for work then planning and again repeating the same seems monotonous. So a change is required for the educators.

“Daily timetables, to-do-lists-, completing curriculum, checking notebooks, preparing assessments, correcting and grading assessments, dealing with parents, communicating with the siblings of the students, handling peer pressure in the staff room, extending a helping hand to a colleague, following instructions given by the leader and taking the lead where necessary, coordinating with other teachers, and collaborating with the students, reaching the class on time and taking part in co-curricular activities!”

OH! All This to be done by one single individual!

It definitely takes its toll.

“Almost everything will work again if you unplug it for a few minutes…including you.”-Anne Lamott

A lot of learning is required before you teach. Learning is not only related to your subject it is also related to the aspects of teaching. After learning it is time to act and then to reboot for some time to gain back the life.

Read on how you do it-

1 1. Food Habits:
Health is the primal factor before you set out to achieve something. If you are weak or lethargic, the brain will not allow your mind to function. Healthy food and nutritional diet are very important for all human beings.

Research says that healthy diet is a good investment in the self for the future.
Schools generally begin with an early morning routine. The educators have to rush about doing their early morning chores and most of them reach school on an empty stomach.
After a lot of activity when you calm down for sometime without proper nutrients in your body, it results in fatigue.
Before leaving the home early morning, make it a point to eat something so that you have the energy to walk through at least half a day before you have a snack for yourself.
Check out the link on how you can manage your diet and live a healthy life-

    2. Out of Internet on Sundays

The internet and gadgets are consuming our valuable ‘ME TIME’. Notifications keep us on an alert throughout the day. We have framed a habit of checking the phone again and again to read the messages or to simply scroll down the screen.
We are losing on high quality time. We are simply wasting the time. No message is as important as your ‘ME TIME’.
On an average, research suggests that a user clicks, taps of switches on the phone around 2617 times. For the more frequent users or addicts the time could be doubled or even more. It means that around 1 million users are spending 2 hours 45 minutes on the phone every day. Multiply the time to see how much time we are spending by just scrolling the screen or reading messages. Divide it by the value that time has generated for us.
If you want to understand it better, try to estimate the revenue that amount of time generated for you in terms of money or quality time you could have spent with friends and family or utilise it to do something fruitful.

You will realise that the return on this investment was not proportionate to the earnings.

So every Sunday keep the internet switched off for long period of times. Just switch it on once or twice a day to check out on important messages. You will see the difference in your mood and your own behaviour.

Keeping the internet off for long hours on Sunday has really helped me reboot for the coming week. I found myself to be more productive because I started investing my time in planning and refuelling myself for the upcoming week.

    3. Chat with colleagues
While going through the daily routine, take out time to chat with the colleagues without a pen or paper in the hand. These short five minute complete breaks are very good to rejuvenate yourself and bring you back completely to life. It invigorates you.
Smile, talk, laugh, share a joke, appreciate, praise or express gratitude for something but do it genuinely during a busy day.

Discuss a recipe of your favourite dish, or discuss a kitchen disaster, talk about the mischief of a child or how another teacher used praised to make the child learn better.
There are millions of ways which can be used to distract your mind from the pressures of work and the deadlines which are looming on your head.

     4. Strong Coffee or Dark Chocolate
Still sometimes life gets too much. Strong or dark coffee at times really brings up your energy level. It makes you more enthusiastic especially when you shut down everything and drink it sip by sip.
Black coffee is known to be a powerhouse of antioxidants. It contains manganese and potassium along with Vitamin B2, B3 and B5.

As advised you should have it daily to reduce the risk of heart diseases and diabetes. But if you have during breaks it will help you to get back on your two feet as early as possible.

    5. Choose an uncomfortable task

Another way to help your mind spring back to life is to choose an uncomfortable task. Try to do something which you are not comfortable with.
I used to go to the Art Room and try to help the art teacher take her class. In this way I learnt a few colouring skills and in return helped her out with the large number of children.
On another occasion I went to the Computer Lab to hone up my Microsoft Excel skills. I did all this by cutting on my correction time. I put extra strain on my time and in the process learnt time management skills.

The aim is to jump out of the comfort zone at times so that you do not make your daily life a routine which is taken for granted.

     No Learning Day
A lot of information is available at the touch of a screen. Within seconds you can become a scholar from an average person. Information can be gathered and consumed twenty four hours a day.
Knowledge and learning is the mantra for success.
Agreed!

But too much information and learning results in over thinking and procrastination. It stops you from taking action because your mind is involved in only processing the information.
Hence do not read any material on a fixed day of the week. Limit the podcasts that you view, do not read every quote that scrolls down your screen.

Just sit and let your mind throwback all the learning that you have done in a week.
You will find wonderful ideas popping out and quotes flowing by your conscious mind.

Now write them down as they appear in your thoughts to be read later on in the day.

This practice actually penetrates what you have learnt from your mind into the subconscious mind and ultimately pushes you to take action.

Without action learning is not of any value.

To Conclude-

Teaching is an interesting and a profession for the passionate people. Some educators make it sound boring and monotonous but it is not. Find the spark in this profession.
It is one of the best professions in the world and will continue to be.
Stay safe and stay healthy.

Keep enjoying your profession!

How to use sticky notes for teaching!

I first got attracted to sticky notes when I saw them in a stationery shop. They were wrapped neatly. I was pulled to them due to the colours. I like neon colours.

I bought my stack not knowing what use to put it to. Being in a leadership position, there was a constant need of sending notes to people as reminders for the work to be done.
The staff members liked my colourful approach. Often I would also draw and make the note more interesting and attractive.
(Actually the colours brought out the creative side of me.)

“Sticky notes are like colourful reminders-you love to do the work which comes through them.”
(I tried to look for quotes related to sticky notes and could not find any so I made a few of my own.)

Yes, they are a waste of paper but the colour combinations are good to lure the brain into positive thinking. Colours after all have a positive impact on the way people work.

I cross correct bundles of notebooks on some days. Then on errors and for appreciations I use colourful tags. Though the colourful tags have negative as well as positive comments, the teachers look forward to only the positive comments.
As one of my staff members stated that she rummaged through the tags to look for the positive comments first. And then later on she turned towards the errors which were pointed out.  In this way the gnawing feeling was less and the euphoria over appreciation was more.

These colourful chits when placed carefully indicate good organisation skills.
I had a colleague who later on became an inseparable friend. She used to meticulously tag her workstation with notes and chits. The pile of books to be distributed would be kept under different tags, the notebooks to be received would be tagged according to priority, the submissions to the principal would be tagged differently, etc.
This made her workstation look neat and pretty. It also looked organised and smartly arranged. In other words it was much better than anyone else.

(She actually overpowered us with her organisational skills!)

Sticky notes can be used to organise your workplace and they are wonderful as a teaching aid. I will discuss both the ways which will make your workplace more colourful and teaching more interesting.

Stick ons to organise a teacher’s workload-
Prioritise your to do list-
It is well said that there should be only three priorities in your life and your day. Write the three priorities on three different colour stick ons. The bright colour will be pointing out to you the entire day and urging you to complete the tasks which you had set for yourself for the day.
Over thinking kills us. To avoid it and to push yourself into doing the most important things first, these colourful reminders help a lot. Putting them up every day states that you are focused towards achieving or completing whatever was very important.

Helps to eat the frog-
This splash of colour helps you to eat your frogs for breakfast or whenever that you are desired to eat.
The difficult or the worst tasks when written on these colour strips with a smiley or a cartoon cuts down the starkness of the task. The task seems less dreaded because the mind returns to the task again and again. This is due to the reminder which the colours throw at you.
It is suggested that you must eat the frog for breakfast. I highly recommend you eat them using these colourful strips of paper. You won’t have to force the frog down your throat because the colour would mellow down its taste.

Motivation:
The fuel of self motivation helps us in living our life and crossing boundaries to achieve success after success. Motivation is generally thought to be external but the ones who are fast moving ahead are found to be working on self motivation. There are only a few people who derive their motivation from someone else. The best of the lot works upon their own thoughts and self learning material to gain motivation in day to day life.

The coloured strips are beneficial in self motivation. Quotes and points which are mentioned on these and pinned up on the board give a constant reminder to the brain.
Your goals can be written on these and displayed on a board in the bedroom or on a board at your workstation. Reading these while coming and going keeps you in track of your progress.
Inspiration for others:
Yes, it is true. These slips pinned on boards or stuck on doors and walls are also an inspiration for others. They get to know how to organise the workplace and your professional life.

The quotes or steps to work out the problem help others also.
Making people part of the journey lessens the load.

The way you use these notes for organising, similarly you can these for teaching in the classroom.

Reading:
Great help! Sticky notes are really helpful in reading. There are many different ways to use them.
ü Ask the students to write difficult words on the slips which they can later put up on the class board.
ü Antonyms and synonyms can be written while reading is going on.
ü The teacher can put up simple questions. So the students can answer them on the sticky notes and put up on the board or run up to the teacher for a reward.
ü The students can be asked to write the extra questions based on the text and post the notes in the book.
ü Vocabulary words can be written and the notes to be put up on the word wall.
ü The names of the books that the students have read can be written on them.
ü Their favourite authors can also be written.
ü A story map or a story web can also be made.

Classroom Management:

ü Use them as rewards for students by drawing stars or smileys.
ü Classroom instructions like collection of notebooks, keeping the classroom clean, etc. can be written and displayed.
ü Student qualities can be put up.
ü A kudos for the classroom can be written.
ü Classroom goals or rules can be written and displayed.

Math:

ü Long and short division can be done easily.
ü Multiplication facts can be written.
ü Bar Graphs can be made.
ü Fractions can be taught using sticky notes.

Environmental Sciences:

ü Difference between two topics can be well illustrated.
ü Places or facts can be marked on the map using these sticky notes.
ü Exit and Entry tickets for a lesson can be planned.
Sticky notes are wonderful teaching aids. There is no end to its use.
Use Innovative ideas and implement them in your teaching.
